Markaz

"Peace finally came to the land—until something deadlier than steel woke up inside its first city."

About the Book

Peace finally came to the land—until something deadlier than steel woke up inside its first city. For ten years, rival noble Houses set aside old feuds to build the Straight Roads—driving back brigands and thieves to open greater commerce for all people—and where those roads met, they raised Markaz, the first city in history. Lady Isott Adunthe arrives as her family's new ambassador to keep that hard-won peace alive. Instead, she witnesses two men in a crowded tavern glow white-hot from within and tear the room apart—unleashing a force no one has ever seen, let alone named. Now bodies are turning up crushed into solid stone at the docks, noble heirs are being hunted on the roads, and the only people who survived the tavern blast can feel the same lethal heat waking up between them. In a city with unfinished walls and no laws, the peace is already dying—and the struggle for who will master what woke up in Markaz is only the beginning. Book One of a new sword-and-sorcery fantasy series where political intrigue meets the birth of a dangerous new power.

The World of Markaz

Before the city, there were only the fortified keeps of rival noble Houses and the wild lands between them. For ten arduous years, those houses hammered out a hard-won truce to build the Straight Roads—paved arteries designed to hold back brigands and unlock commerce for all people.

At the great crossroads where those straight roads converged, humanity broke the ancient mold: they began constructing Markaz, the first city in recorded history.

What Woke Up

“She witnessed two men in a crowded tavern glow white-hot from within and tear the room apart—unleashing a force no one has ever seen, let alone named.”

Markaz was founded on trade and peace, but it has no precedent, no established laws, and unfinished walls. When a raw, lethal power awakens in the blood of ordinary men and women, the fragile treaty begins to crumble.

  • The Docks: Crushed bodies pressed into solid stone with impossible force.
  • The Straight Roads: Noble couriers and heirs hunted in the shadows of the trade routes.
  • The Survivors: A scattered handful of ordinary survivors who carried away the white-hot ember—and can feel it stirring again.

Project Status

Markaz is currently in active worldbuilding and developmental drafting.

  • Story Bible & Magic Lore: Complete

The Just Judges

"Retired. Abroad. Framed for murder. Wrong women to underestimate."

Heather Richards, a retired Canadian accountant who thinks in ledgers and cooks when the numbers won't settle, arrives in Ghent with her best friend Jane for art, good food, and a quiet holiday. Instead they find Professor Henri Dumont dead in St. Bavo's Cathedral — a puncture wound in his neck, Heather's knitting needle the perfect match. He believed he was hours from recovering the Just Judges, the panel stolen from Jan van Eyck's 1432 Ghent Altarpiece. Someone made sure he never reached it. In 1934, Arsène Goedertier stole that panel and died without telling the Bishop of Ghent where he hid it. Ninety years later, witnesses saw Heather and Jane talking with Henri that morning. Their passports are confiscated. An obstinate inspector wants them for murder — while a killer still loose knows they are looking. Can two retired Canadians clear their names and bring the Just Judges home before forty-eight hours run out?
