Meet the Author

d.c.dear

Stories, cocktails, art-world puzzles, and expansive imagination.

Doug's first detention was in kindergarten for coloring outside the lines. It was also his last detention.

In retirement, he decided he had to do something with all the stories floating around in his grey cells, so he started writing them down. English was never his strong suit in school; putting words and ideas on paper came easily enough — his chief battle has always been grammar, and overcoming the stupidity inherent in the English language.

As d.c.dear, he writes cozy mysteries, sci-fi, and fantasy. Now 66 and the proud father of three grown young men, he lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Before turning full-time to writing in retirement, his career spanned television, TV IT, legal IT, and serving as a network designer for converting film X-ray systems to digital imaging.

Today he can usually be found drinking pour-over coffee or discovering new and untried cocktails — weekend indulgences that haven't gone away. His hobbies are many and varied, from acrylic pour painting to photography. He's a recent convert to hot yoga.

Reader Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why write across three completely different genres?

Because the human imagination rarely fits in a single box! Writing Cozy Mystery sharpens my ear for dialogue, pacing, and clever misdirection. Sci-Fi forces rigorous speculative logic and philosophical wonder. Fantasy allows me to build sweeping histories, languages, and magic systems from whole cloth. Each genre recharges my creative energy for the others.

In what order should I read your books?

Each book can be enjoyed on its own! For European cathedral intrigue and stolen master mysteries, begin with The Just Judges (A Heather Richards Mystery). For art recovery puzzles and fine craft cocktails, start with The Case Of Alfred Smythe Concord, esq. (The Cocktail Mysteries).

Where can I find your books?
